The original, now legendary Speed Panchro lenses were the first lenses used to shoot sound pictures in Hollywood throughout the first half of the 20th century. The first series (S1) were supplied on Bell & Howell cameras in 1927.

By 1930, the Cooke Speed Panchro f/2.0 lenses (S1) were offered in focal lengths: 24, 28, 32, 35, 40, 47, 50, 58, 75, 100 and 108mm. In 1935 (S1) f/2.0: 24, 28, 32, 35, 40, 50, 75 and 108mm and were designed to cover standard format 0.631 x 0.868 inch.

In 1945, Cooke Speed Panchro (S2) lenses were designed to cover 0.723 x 0.980 inch format and were made in focal lengths: 18, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 75mm. 1953-54, the Cooke Speed Panchros (S3) lenses were a redesign of the (S2) 18mm and 25mm focal lengths produced to address the use of wide screen formats. The 18mm (S3) design achieved a larger angular field of 80 degrees at f/1.7 presentation.
